Overpacking for a surf trip is easy to do and rarely worth it — most gear is rentable in Taghazout, and a lighter bag means more room for whatever you bring home. Here's what's actually worth carrying.
Wetsuit: bring your own if you have one, otherwise rent
Thickness depends entirely on when you're coming:
- October – May: 3/2mm, boots optional for sensitive feet
- June – September: 2mm or boardshorts / rash vest
If you already own a wetsuit that fits well, bring it — fit matters more than anything else. If not, don't buy one specially; every package includes rental.
Board: only if you're particular
Every Taghazout Surf Trip package includes board rental, and the house quiver covers foam beginner boards through performance shortboards. Bring your own only if you have a specific board you're attached to — airlines' board bag fees add up fast for a one-week trip.
Worth packing
- Reef-safe sunscreen — hard to find locally, and your skin will thank you
- A rash vest, even in winter (long paddle sessions plus wetsuit rub)
- A light jacket or hoodie for evenings — desert-edge nights get cool fast
- A dry bag for the walk to and from the beach
- Earplugs designed for surfing, if you're prone to ear irritation
- A portable charger — long days, and you'll want your phone for photos
- Cash in dirhams — taxis, the souk, and small cafés often don't take cards
Morocco packing list beyond the surf bag
The surf gear is the easy part; this is what people actually forget for the country itself.
- A passport valid for the whole stay
- Cash in dirhams plus one card (cards are not accepted everywhere)
- A light layer for the evenings
- Modest clothes for the village and the souk
- A plug adapter if you need one (Morocco uses type C and E sockets, 220 V)
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- A small first-aid kit and any prescription medicine
- A reusable bottle (tap water is not drunk here; the house has bottled or filtered water)
- A daypack for the excursions
- Travel insurance documents
Don't bother bringing
- Multiple wetsuits "just in case" — one that fits is enough
- A full board bag of wax, leashes and fin keys — the house wax room has you covered
- Heavy hiking boots, unless you're specifically planning an Atlas Mountains day trip
- Formal clothing — Taghazout is resolutely casual, even at dinner
A quick note on modesty
Morocco is a Muslim country and Taghazout is used to surf tourists, but a little modesty off the beach goes a long way — pack something to throw on over swimwear for the walk through the village.
